Brief of Founder
The founder of Jeevan Jyoti Charitable Foundation is Dr. Ruby. Dr. Ruby is an alumna of Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab, and completed her post-graduation in Anaesthesia at JJ Group of Hospitals in Mumbai. She also holds a diploma in Acupuncture from G.T. Hospital, Mumbai. After working as a Medical Advisor/Product Manager in the pharmaceutical industry for over 5 years, she moved on to work as an Assistant Hospital Superintendent at the Corporate Hospital, Jaslok Hospital and Research Institute in Mumbai. While at Jaslok, Dr. Ruby simultaneously volunteered as a doctor among the Warli Tribes in the Thane District of Mumbai on weekends. This volunteering experience ignited her passion for serving the poor, needy, destitute, and marginalized members of society.
In 1994, Dr. Ruby returned to her hometown of Pune to take over her late mother's General/ObGyn practice. Her dedication to helping the underprivileged led her to volunteer as a medical doctor among hutment and chawl dwellers. In 2001, she accepted the challenge of working with HIV-affected individuals in the Red Light Area of Pune and began volunteering as a medical doctor with People's Health Organisation in Budhwar Peth, Pune.
The deep compassion and connection she formed during her volunteer work inspired her to initiate her own efforts in an area that was often neglected by others. The startup phase was marked by adversity and challenges, but these did not deter her from her vision and mission. While working as a doctor in a free clinic for Commercial Sex Workers for three years, Dr. Ruby observed a pressing need—the children of Commercial Sex Workers. These children were neglected and faced hunger as their mothers earned meager incomes. Witnessing these children suffering and living in adverse conditions motivated Dr. Ruby to establish Jeevan Jyoti Charitable Foundation (JJCF) in 2005 as a Balwadi and Day Care Center. JJCF, a sanctuary, was created to provide nourishment, care, and support to these vulnerable children and women of the Red Light Area, regardless of their caste, religion, or creed, ensuring they receive their basic human rights. Dr. Ruby's zeal and passion remain strong to this day, even though she has faced adverse health conditions.
